Job Summary

This post is a full-time, fixed term post for twelve months and has been made possible by the generosity of the Hellenic Bank Association of Greece. The Researcher will be based in the Hellenic Observatory, which is part of the European Institute, and will be responsible to the Director of the Hellenic Observatory. This role is the equivalent of a Research Officer under LSE’s Research Career family.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Fellowship is intended to support research in an area specified by the Hellenic Observatory. For 2018-19, we seek a candidate who can undertake a coherent programme of research on Greece and/or Cyprus as indicated by the research proposal you will have submitted as part of the application process. The fellowship will develop expertise on Greece and/or Cyprus, in particular in the area of political economy. Preference may be given to those focusing on the Greek and/or Cypriot banking sectors. The research will be undertaken under the supervision of the Observatory’s staff and should demonstrate the ability to frame and research complex ideas, concepts or theories and to apply appropriate methodologies to your empirical analysis.

  • The research will be designed to lead to publication(s) of relevance to contemporary policy debates and in high quality publications in peer-reviewed outlets.
  • Conducting research projects or programmes either independently or in a team.
  • Contributing to the formulation of peer reviewed research grant proposals.
  • Demonstrating the ability to analyse and research complex ideas, concepts or theories and applying appropriate methodologies.
  • Contributing creative solutions to research challenges.
  • Design, implement and evaluate fieldwork and collate data using appropriate data analysis tools.
  • Write up research for publication including peer reviewed journals.
  • Present research papers at conferences.
  • Organise conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Initiating and sustaining links with external bodies to foster collaboration.
  • Produce regular progress reports for the Director of the Observatory on the research and likely publications.
  • Provide a full written report to the Director before the end of the appointment that may be passed to the Advisory Board.
  • Acknowledge the support of the Observatory in all public activities and publications deriving from the appointment period.
  • Play a constructive role in the life of the Hellenic Observatory by participating in its public activities and offering appropriate support to them and initiating such activities on behalf of the Observatory.

  • PhD in the social sciences
  • comprehensive and substantial knowledge of contemporary Greece/and Cyprus

Job Summary

The Hellenic Observatory seeks to appoint a Research Officer who will facilitate sustained research and research coordination in the Hellenic Observatory. This post is a full-time, fixed term post for 2 years. The Research Officer will be based in the Hellenic Observatory, which is part of the European Institute, and will be responsible to the Director of the Hellenic Observatory. The post holder will have good extensive knowledge of Modern Greek.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparing and project coordinating applications for research/project funding as relevant to the agenda of the Hellenic Observatory
  • Undertaking independent research on one or more projects of direct relevance to the interests of the Hellenic Observatory and to the public policy agenda in Greece
  • Supporting the general research activities of the Hellenic Observatory
  • Taking the main initiative in the planning of research, conducting research projects and programmes independently and as part of a team.
  • The research will be designed to lead to publication(s) of relevance to contemporary policy debates and in high quality publications in peer-reviewed outlets.
  • Leading in the formulation of peer reviewed research grant proposals.
  • Demonstrating the ability to analyse and research complex ideas, concepts or theories and applying appropriate methodologies.
  • Contributing creative solutions to research challenges.
  • Designing, implementing and evaluating fieldwork and collating data using appropriate data analysis tools.
  • Writing up research for publication in a variety of modes including peer reviewed journals.
  • Presenting research findings/papers at conferences/seminars/workshops.
  • Organising and assisting with conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Initiating and sustaining links with external bodies to foster collaboration.
  • Producing regular progress reports for the Director of the Observatory on the research and likely publications.
  • Providing a full written report to the Director before the end of the appointment that may be passed to the Advisory Board.
  • Undertaking appropriate administrative tasks
  • Attending relevant meetings
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the line manager

 The European Institute together with the Hellenic Observatory are pleased to invite applications for Visiting Research Students at the LSE for the academic year 2018/19. This scheme is supported by the Hellenic Observatory and is open to research students who are currently registered for a PhD at a university in Greece or Cyprus and are EU citizens.

Type of appointment: full-time

Duration:1 semester

Subsistence Award: £3,800 per semester (+tuition fees cover)

(4) Call for Research Project Proposals 2018

The Hellenic Observatory is delighted to announce the launch of an exciting research initiative to further fulfil and develop its mission and study of contemporary Greece and Cyprus in the field of the social sciences. On this occasion, we invite applications from researchers to conduct time-sensitive and globally competitive policy relevant research on contemporary Greece and/or Cyprus.

Research Themes & Level of Awards

Researchers are invited to submit a research proposal on one of the following themes:

1. £20,000 grant - projects should run for a maximum 24 months (1 award)

1(a) ‘Sources of growth in post-crisis Greece: economic analyses of growth drivers for the Greek economy’

1(b) ‘The role and capabilities of Independent Authorities in Greece in the formulation and implementation of public policy’

2. £8,000 grant - projects should run for a maximum 12 months (2 awards)

2(a) ‘Reforming the state education sector in Greece: Pitfalls and Prospects’

2(b) ‘Understanding the causes and consequences of Low-Intensity Violence as a phenomenon in Greek political and social life’

2(c) ‘An analysis of the relationship between mass media, political parties and private enterprise: comparing Greece and other EU member states’

2(d) ‘The Challenge of Migrant Integration in Greece: The consequences in economic and social terms’

Visiting Fellowship Scheme

The Hellenic Observatory (HO) welcomes applications for Visiting Fellows, Visiting Senior Fellows & Visiting Professors by academics or policy practitioners who may want to spend a period of between 6-12 months at the LSE to conduct independent research on a topic relevant to the work of the Hellenic Observatory.
